Debi's Designs

Debi's Designs actually pre-dates EZ Piecing as a Comp-U-Wear venture.
In fact, it precedes even Comp-U-Wear.
This was how we all began as a sewing-focused company.
Debi's Designs is art made by thread painting on fabric pieces.
Some pieces feature hand painted backgrounds, others dye-sublimation printed features, and some with applique, but all of them are hand assembled quilted pieces with hand sewn "thread painting."

History

I taught myself to sew when I was about ten years old, and I made most of my own clothes through high school and college. I played around with designing, and I even had dreams of going to design school in New York. But one dream took the place of another, and after college, I married my husband, Bob, and started a family in a small, rural town in central California, surrounded by history and family. I kept sewing and crafting through the years, but growing a business and raising our son, Donald, took priority.
It wasn't until my son was grown that I really got back into sewing and designing. Artists like Jinny Beyer and Judy Murrah inspired me to teach myself to quilt, something I'd always wanted to do. I spent a number of years designing, making and selling vests and jackets, experimenting with embellishing techniques and color.
I loved the traditional quilts, but after a while, I felt like something was missing. It always ended up being a real chore to get them finished, I suppose because I was bored easily.
Everything changed the day I saw an art quilt at a local quilting store. It was a rendition of a motorcycle which originally caught my eye because my husband had been a motorcycle racer, and racing was (and still is) a big part of our lives. But when I saw the detail and the craftsmanship, I knew that this was the type of challenge I was looking for. I took a class to learn the basic technique and used that as a springboard for developing my own style.
That first quilt inspired me a few years ago, as we spent May at the Indy 500, to try my hand at quilting a race car, the first of several commemorative quilts that I've created for drivers including Rusty Wallace, Al Unser, Jr. and Tony Stewart.
Through this whole journey, my family has been very supportive, being at once my most enthusiastic fans and my most honest critics.
I hope you will enjoy browsing through the galleries that follow and please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about any of the works you see. Enjoy!
